By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

TS2 Satellite Technologies, a provider of global satellite access services has introduced various terminals including Thrane and Thrane Explorer 110/300/500/700, Hughes HNS 9201 and Wideye SABRE 1.

These devices are suitable for companies and individuals who require mobile communications while traveling or working at remote locations, where cellular networks or ground-based communications facilities are absent.

TS2’s BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) modems are portable and can be set up conveniently by a simple plug-and-play mechanism and the device comes with a user-friendly graphical user interface.

BGAN ensures that a user has his portable office up and running within minutes whether on land, water, air or high in the mountains or in deserts. BGAN satellites two-way (upload and download) modems are portable and the size of a laptop computer. The small compact device weighs less than a kilogram (T&T Explorer 110) and it allows transfer and reception of files of any size within a satellite network from anywhere on earth, up to 492 Kbits per second.

The device is well equipped with USB, WLAN, Bluetooth and ISDN and is most suitable for being a control unit or communications center which can communicate with a decision center.

BGAN terminals will be most useful for foreign correspondents, soldiers, crisis management units, police, fire brigades, emergency services and other safety services. Other users who can benefit from the portability of the BGAN are travelers to remote locations, people who take part in extreme sports, sailors and officers of international organizations posted in remote areas.

The BGAN terminals are robust enough to handle communications even in extreme weather conditions. The device is well protected from the effects of water, humidity, shock, dirt and can with stand very low temperatures of up to -40 degrees C and high temperatures of +80 degrees C.

The modem also includes accessories like a solar panel, car antenna and a power-generating unit and many computers and other compatible devices can be connected to one modem.

TS2 Satellite Technologies is delivering BGAN services to U.S. Army soldiers presently posted in Iraq and Afghanistan. Most soldiers possess a laptop connected to the Internet in their barracks. This keeps them in touch with family and serves as a morale booster.
