Truphone Looks Forward to an Exciting 2009

By Greg Galitzine, Group Editorial Director

Truphone (News - Alert) is a free application that’s designed to allow users to inexpensively make international mobile calls from their own phone over the Internet. Earlier this year the company announced a native VoIP client for the iPhone developed with Apple’s (News - Alert) own SDK, available via the online iPhone App Store. The solution routes calls over WiFi, so if the user finds themselves near a hotspot and needs to make a call, they can simply call up the Truphone application on their iPhone (News - Alert) and place the call.

More recently Truphone announced a beta of its application Truphone Anywhere, for BlackBerry (News - Alert) users.

Truphone PR Manager Matt Rowntree took some time to answer some questions for TMCnet.

GG: When you look back on 2008, was it a good year for your company?
MR: Absolutely. We secured all the funding we need, structured the company for future success and had some great engineering breakthroughs for our applications.

GG: What was your firm’s biggest achievement last year?
MR: Blazing a trail in the mobile VoIP market and being the first mobile VoIP application available for download on Apple’s App Store.

GG: What can we expect to see from your company for the next 12 months? MR: More of the same — we have an exciting roadmap and 2009 will be as full of revelations as 2008.

GG: Do you think a new administration in Washington will be good for the communications industry? If so, how? If not, why not?
MR: We believe the Obama administration will be good for the USA TELECOM and the VoIP market. We see this next administration as one that will celebrate innovation, competition and challenging the “old” way of thinking and doing business. This all bodes well for an innovative technology provider like Truphone. These next few years will be an exciting time for the USA and great opportunity exists for the Communications industry.

GG: In your view, please describe the future of the IP Communications industry?
MR: 2009 will see mobile VoIP begin to hit mainstream consumers

GG: How do the current market conditions affect your potential customers? Do you think they will hold off on purchasing new solutions or do you think the economic conditions will spur them to make purchases that will allow them to be more competitive?
MR: We allow our customers to experience huge savings so the current market conditions will drive take up of our services.

GG: What sets your company’s solutions apart from the competition?
MR: Our engineers produce top quality products that are intuitive to use — simplicity of functionality.

GG: If you had to make one bold prediction for 2009, what would it be?
MR: That you will be hearing a LOT more from Truphone.
