Polycom Launches Presence Enabled Telepresence, Collaboration Solutions

By Greg Galitzine, Group Editorial Director

Making headlines from their User Group event in Florida, Polycom (News - Alert) today announced a presence-enabled solution for designed to marry telepresence and desktop video collaboration within a common converged management platform.

The solution integrates the Polycom Converged Management Application (CMA) and CMA Desktop, a highly scalable desktop video application, and was created with the goal of offering customers a range of visual communication solutions that would fit various application, space and budget requirements from desktop scenarios to executive level deployments.

Polycom’s new HDX 2.5 software supports integration between Polycom telepresence solutions and Polycom’s video network management solution, CMA, a key component of which is CMA Desktop, a desktop video application for use on PCs.

Based on open standards and designed to work across Polycom’s standards-based telepresence and video conferencing solutions portfolio, the solution supports high definition (HD) video, HD Voice, and content while scaling to thousands of users across an organization.

The integration allows Polycom telepresence solutions and CMA Desktop clients to share presence information within a common contact list that can be integrated with corporate directories leveraging Active Directory or LDAP. Users will be able to start video calls by simply clicking names within the contact list. IT administrators will be able to easily upgrade, provision, and manage the application as well.

In order to help existing customers who may have already purchased Polycom’s ReadiManager SE200 solution, the company also announced a migration program designed to assist these customers in migrating to the new CMA platform by purchasing CMA licenses for a reduced cost and migrating existing ReadiManager SE200 licenses to the new CMA 4000 or CMA 5000 hardware, which they will receive at no additional charge.

Polycom also announced they would extend 1080p and broadcast-quality 720p at 60 frames per second (fps) across its entire telepresence product line.

The solutions, which fall under Polycom’s UltimateHD “umbrella”, leverage Polycom’s HD voice quality and offer users the ability to share multimedia content in HD. The new offerings also feature Polycom’s patented Lost Packet Recovery QoS technology. This technology was created to allow for a more even, consistent level of quality of experience.

Support for 1080p and 720p 60fps will be available on new Polycom RealPresence Experience (RPX) and Polycom Telepresence (News - Alert) Experience (TPX) immersive telepresence solutions, the RMX 2000 real-time media conferencing platform, and a new Polycom HDX 8006 room telepresence solution designed for medium and large conference rooms.

Polycom also announced programs for qualified customers wanting to upgrade their systems to support the new solution.

The Polycom HDX 8006 is now available for order starting at US$17,499 and will be available in December. Polycom plans to release the RMX 2000 solutions (with 1080p and 720p 60fps support) and upgrade programs for qualified customers in the Q1 2009. RPX and TPX 1080p and 720p 60fps solutions are set to follow.
