45 Percent of U.S. Workers Sometimes Work RemotelyBy Gary Kim, Contributing Editor In a recent survey, researchers at the Pew (News - Alert) Internet & American Life Project found that 45 percent of employed respondents do at least some amount of at-home work. Some 18 percent of job-holding Americans work at home every day or almost every day. In addition, about 37 percent of employed Americans say they are working from home at least a few times per month, and 20 percent say they do at-home work every day or almost every day.
All of this behavior is driving the business need for remote access and distributed computing support.
Approximately 60 percent of workers say they use the Internet every day at work, while close to 28 percent report they never use it.
At work, 27 percent of employed online Americans use the Internet constantly. In comparison, just 14 percent of online Americans say they "constantly" use the Internet at home.
Internet usage on the job also tends to vary by a person’s chosen field of work. Nearly three out of four professionals and managers or executives use the Internet at work, either constantly or several times a day. About half of clerical, office and sales workers also use the Internet at work at least several times a day. Service workers and those in the skilled trades are far less likely to report Internet use at work.
About 12 percent of employed Americans who use the Internet say they have created or worked on a blog. But just 2 percent of employed Internet users say they blog at work.
Employed Internet users aged 18 to 29 are more than twice as likely to blog when compared with 30 to 49 year olds. About 20 percent of those between 18 and 29 blog, compared to 9 percent of those 30 to 49.
Blog reading is also most prevalent among younger generations of employed Internet users, as you might expect. One in three Internet-using employees (33 percent) say they have read someone else’s blog or online journal, and 11 percent report at least some at-work reading. However, among young working adults, 46 percent are blog readers, compared with 33 percent of 30 to 49 year olds and 25 percent of employed Internet users ages 50 to 64.
