Egnyte's Mobile Drive for iPhone Offers a Secure, Cloud-Based Service for BusinessesBy Michael Dinan, TMCnet Editor Saying it’s offering iPhone (News - Alert) users a way to access their business networks securely and through the Internet, a Mountain View, California-based company today is launching a new integrated service for owners of Apple’s (News - Alert) ultra-popular new device.
Officials from Egnyte say their 2.0 release, featuring a mobile drive, combines online file storage, file-sharing software and continuous backup.
According to the company’s chief executive officer, Vineet K. Jain, the rise of the distributed, mobile workforce has created a need for business-class server solutions that are hosted on the cloud.
![]() “With the shift toward a virtual office, small businesses and professionals need services that work from any location,” Jain said. “In particular, for a growing number of professionals, the iPhone functions as their primary Internet access point. With Egnyte 2.0, iPhone users have secure and immediate access to all their files no matter where they are.”
The announcement comes on a day that the robust mobile application market gains another competitor.
This morning, as TMCnet reported, a group of Redmond, Washington-based IT veterans launched a new mobile app development company, MobUI, which features a platform they say will create iPhone, mobile Web and downloadable applications for major consumer brands.
TMCnet spoke to MobUI co-founder John Burry about the company’s niche in a market dominated now by the iPhone, which is expected to get some competition soon from Google’s Android platform and BlackBerry’s (News - Alert) App Center.
Burry told TMCnet that the market is seeing tremendous growth.
“While it is a tough time to launch most types of new companies, the mobile application market is witnessing a huge increase in consumer demand which is making it a great time to launch companies dedicated to helping the large brands deliver in this area,” Burry told TMCnet.
Egnyte officials also see the market’s strong possibilities. They say the iPhone integration provides a number of options for file sharing and document collaboration, including sharing folders and files, sending attachments and controlling versions of files.
“There is no application to buy or install,” Egnyte officials say. “Using the iPhone browser, small businesses and professionals can easily navigate folder hierarchies and open files using the touch screen.”
The product is earning strong feedback already.
Max Gardner, a manager at Berkeley, California-based StrateGen Consulting, a clean energy solutions provider, said the new iPhone interface has facilitated business.
“Our team now has access to all of our critical files wherever we are,” Gardner said. “Before, we would have to power up a laptop, if it was available, to get immediate answers or share files with a client. Now, we can quickly pull up and share files in just a few taps wherever we are. The immediacy and convenience are great.”
Egnyte officials say their company’s cloud-based file server ensures that no one who isn’t authorized will have access to data.
