D2 Technologies Software Platforms Powering IP Communications

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

While Fixed-Mobile Convergence (News - Alert) is the transition point in the telecommunications industry expected to remove the distinctions between fixed and mobile networks, companies like D2 Technologies are creating necessary seamless services using embedded software platforms that power IP communications.

D2 is a market leader in software platforms that power IP communications equipment and the company's embedded VoIP software enables manufacturers to use leading communications hardware platforms and ICs to quickly and affordably deliver a broad range of communications devices

The devices range from terminals and network equipment to wireless IP phones. D2's software, which processes billions of minutes per month across a wide variety of different types of devices, is setting the stage for the next generation of converged multimode IP handsets and terminal equipment.

Recently D2 released its  vPort Gateway (GW) embedded VoIP software on the award-winning PowerPC 405EX high performance processor from Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ: AMCC (News - Alert)).

Thie joint solution gives OEMs and ODMs an economical way to more quickly develop today's most advanced enterprise-class wireless access points and residential gateways delivering triple- and quadruple-play voice/video/data/wireless functionality with the lowest possible power consumption.

"By making D2 Technologies' (News - Alert) vPort VoIP solution's optimized support for voice performance and advanced telephony and voice signaling features available on the PowerPC 405EX Kilauea evaluation platform, we make it easier for OEMs and ODMs to develop best-in-class wired and wireless networking products and bring them to production in the shortest time possible,” said Ashton, director of Enablement at AMCC.

“We expect many customers to adopt the PowerPC 405EX running vPort software as a way to minimize risk and accelerate time-to-market for their products."
The PowerPC 405EX was recently named Product of the Year by the editors of Electronic Products magazine. It combines the proven performance of the market leading PPC405 processor with an optimized suite of peripheral and memory interfaces, including PCI Express, USB 2.0 On-the-Go, DDR 2/1 and Gigabit Ethernet.

It also supports the broadest range of security protocols in a small form factor with sub-2-W power dissipation. When integrated with D2's vPort GW software platform, the PowerPC 405EX provides advanced VoIP telephony capabilities such as protocol signaling, soft DSP voice algorithm processing, and advanced voice quality assurance technology such as jitter buffer and packet loss compensation. These rich voice features are achieved with minimal memory and CPU impact, of particular importance for low cost implementations.
"AMCC is an industry titan in the PowerPC processor market, and D2 is also strong in its support of this architecture," said Doug Makishima, vice Ppresident of Marketing and Sales at D2 Technologies. "The combination of our products results in a highly-scalable and cost-effective solution for OEMs and ODMs that eliminates bandwidth-intensive processing issues and facilitates the production of elegantly simple designs for next generation WLAN applications."
