DSL Forum Changes Name to Broadband Forum, Broadens Focus to FMC and Other Emerging TechnologiesBy Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor At the very first meeting of the Broadband Forum, formerly the DSL Forum, topics on the agenda included the future of fixed-mobile convergence (FMC), the role of Internet Protocol (IP) version 6 (IPv6), fiber architecture work and the successful deployment of IPTV (News - Alert) over DSL.
During the event, Regina Donato Lundgren, vice president and head of IP production at TeliaSonera (News - Alert), delivered the keynote speech. She said TeliaSonera wants to work with the Broadband Forum to develop broadband standards.
The organization’s work with DSL continues, although its focus is now broadened to include newer, emerging and converging technologies. With more than 65 percent of the market share and nearly nine million additional subscribers added in the last quarter alone, DSL still remains a popular technology, according to analysis firm Point Topic. Over the last three months, fiber installations also increased by nearly 7 percent.
“Our work continues to evolve as the industry around us changes,” said George Dobrowski, Broadband Forum chairman and president, in a statement. “Our main priority is to provide workable network, access and management solutions and standards that answer real world problems. Our next big challenge, FMC is driving a lot of new work and industry collaboration, and we will do our part to ensure wireline providers are equipped for this next wave of broadband expansion.”
FMC has the potential to bring new meaning to Internet usage. With technologies like mobile WiMAX (News - Alert), providers can offer nomadic, portable and mobile access to the Internet and IP services that complement fixed broadband networks.
