Toshiba Strata CIX Line Now Interoperable with PAETEC SIP Trunking Services

By Brendan B. Read, Senior Contributing Editor

Owners, operators, and would-be purchasers and users of Toshiba’s (News - Alert) Strata CIX family of IP business communication systems will now be able to use PAETEC SIP Trunking nationwide thanks to a new interoperability agreement between both firms.

The Toshiba-PAETEC SIP Trunking service gives Toshiba Strata CIX IP system users ISDN-like features over a data connection. That avoids buying separate services for voice and data and simplifies installation and maintenance.

Buyers will also be able to source PAETEC’s services via Toshiba’s authorized dealer network thanks to a deal making Toshiba a National Master Sales Agent for the communications firm. This agreement marks PAETEC's first national sales channel partnership with a VoIP customer premises equipment manufacturer.

PAETEC delivers personalized communications solutions to business customers and serves more than 4.1 million access line equivalents nationwide.  PAETEC’s service footprint will extend to 82 of the top 100 U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Areas in 2008.

Unlike legacy network solutions that require a VoIP Gateway (News - Alert) to connect the IP network and TDM trunks, the Strata CIX system with an MIPU card and PAETEC’s SIP Trunking benefits from a native IP connection.  An integrated circuit handles both data and voice.  The same MIPU interface also supports IP stations, remote users, soft phones, WiFi (News - Alert) telephones, and Strata Net multi-system networking.

To ensure high-quality voice communications, PAETEC’s quality of service capabilities instantly gives voice signals priority over data.  When no voice signals are present, all available bandwidth can be used for data.  PAETEC’s SIP Trunking service use compression techniques that can deliver more high-quality voice pathways simultaneously over a single T1 connection than traditional primary rate interfaces or PRIs.

PAETEC’s service has other benefits including in-network VoIP-to-TDM voice conversion, unlimited and expanded free local calling areas, site-to-site voice and data sharing protected from the public Internet, and lower cost per voice path and user as the number of users grows.

“The nationwide interoperability of Toshiba’s equipment and PAETEC’s SIP Trunking mitigates the need for large enterprises to create patchwork network solutions to address different parts of the country, “says Sanjay Hiranandani, PAETEC Senior Vice President, Engineering. “We operate 39 soft switches, and they all can now deliver the reliability and durability of Toshiba’s VoIP business communication systems to business-class customers.”

At least one analyst likes the deals.

“As Enterprise SIP Solutions evolve, agreements between Service Providers and equipment manufacturers will increasingly become prevalent,” says Rebecca Swensen, research analyst, VoIP Services at IDC (News - Alert). “The PAETEC and Toshiba strategic partnership is unique. This relationship facilitates simplicity, flexibility and the ability to customize solutions to fit customer needs. This will simplify the process of migrating enterprise customers to SIP solutions.”
