Greece Telephony and Broadband Operator Selects Bentley

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Bentley’s communications software solution has been selected and deployed by Attica Telecom, a telecom provider recently acquired by hellas online, a fixed telephony and broadband operator in Greece, the companies announced today.

The solution is expected to help operators design and build a 280-mile fiber network in Athens and other major cities in Greece, including Thessaloniki, company officials say.

Bentley’s communications solution, including Bentley Fiber and Bentley Inside Plant, offers several benefits to Attica Telecom, Bentley officials say. The solution can interoperate, helps plan infrastructure at a large scale, ensures that design and build phases are executed at the lowest possible cost, provides easy access to all project data via a repository-based system and creates streamlined workflows.

Initially, Attica Telecom began the design process with several different desktop applications, including Microsoft (News - Alert) Access, Visio, Excel, and static CAD drawings, company officials say.

However, the company soon realized that this was unproductive. Dimitris Nikas, head of GIS and fiber optic documentation at Attica Telecom, said that the series of products they worked with were not interoperable and most of the design workflows required printouts and paper-based transactions to move things forward. The situation took a bad turn as errors were introduced into the process, and then it was almost impossible to keep the data up to date across all of these programs and file types, Nikas said.

An ideal solution for Attica Telecom was one that could deliver cable information, access point information, duct information, splice enclosure information, building enclosure information, documentation of the fiber distribution panels, full documentation of the inside plant inventory, and customer information.

They also wanted to display this information graphically and make it readily available to all of the designers and construction engineers on the project. Besides all these requirements Attica Telecom wanted the system to be repository-based, allowing comprehensive data queries with easy data import and export tools, and to have the capability to support the correlation of logical events with a physical location.

Nikas said that Bentley communications solutions are based on mature, tried-and-trusted technology and there was no need for any form of custom development. Attica Telecom simply had to configure the products to handle their data, Nikas said. As soon as they had installed the products and completed the initial setup, Attica Telecom was able to begin importing the existing data from their Access database and from Visio.

“At that point we were ready to go,” Nikas recalled.

Today, all design work for the network is done using Bentley Fiber and Bentley Inside Plant. Specifically, Bentley Fiber is used by several members of the hellas online team, from designers to field engineers and those dealing with customer issues.

In the future, hellas online officials say they intend to deploy additional products in the Bentley communications solution, including Bentley Geo Web Publisher for Communications that presents maps and diagrams in a Web browser environment for nontechnical users. They will also deploy the ProjectWise collaboration system to leverage its comprehensive workflow and documentation management capabilities.
