Extreme Networks Enhances Protection for IP Telephony and VoIP Traffic

Extreme Networks ( News - Alert) has enhanced its network solutions that provide behavior-based rules to protect IP  telephony and VoIP traffic.
Leveraging these security rules businesses can help mitigate the threat of malicious users and hackers who are actively trying to exploit vulnerabilities and breach the IP communications network. The company explained that, based on these rules, users or devices that demonstrate destructive behavior when entering the network can rapidly be addressed.
Extreme Networks, an Avaya ( News - Alert) Global Alliance Partner , is now offering a packaged set of rules for Extreme Networks Sentriant security appliance. These IPTelephony security rules help to simplify management tasks and better protect VoIP gateways,SIP  servers and VoIP phones.
Suresh Gopalakrishnan, vice president and general manager for the Emerging Product group at Extreme Networks said in a statement that the amount of voice traffic carried on the converged network is expanding as is the risk exposure to threats.
He pointed out that although the IP Telephony equipment suppliers have done their part to secure communications, behavior of users and malicious applications on the network edge can still impact VoIP  performance. The company has added behavior-based rules to their Sentriant security appliance in order to help negate these vulnerabilities and make converged networks stable, secure and reliable.
“Clearly, the innovative security rules from Extreme Networks are designed to further enhance converged solutions and deliver better voice quality in a unified communications environment,” said Eric Rossman, vice president, developer relations and technical alliances, Avaya.
Rossman emphasized that protecting converged communications and improving the voice application is key in providing high quality converged communications to businesses.
Extreme Networks designs, builds, and installs Ethernet  infrastructure solutions that solve the toughest business communications challenges. The company was in news last week for announcing the general availability of its complete Provider Backbone Bridging – Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) solution that spans from the edge of the network through the metro core. PBB-TE is comprised of new software and hardware, as well as a strategic relationship with control plane partner Soapstone Networks ( News - Alert) to meet the demands of this rapidly growing market.
