Lucent to Deploy and Integrate All IP Network for KPN
By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Lucent Technologies ( News - Alert) announced it has signed a network integration and program management contract with KPN for its All IP Next Generation Network (NGN). Lucent will manage the deployment and integration of the NGN, which is based on an IP Multimedia Subsystem ( News - Alert) (IMS) architecture.
Lucent will be responsible for migrating KPN’s existing services and customer to the new IP network to meet the company’s marketing objectives as part of the agreement. The new network will be deployed across The Netherlands and will support new triple-play multimedia services while also meeting a targeted annual cost savings of several hundred million by the year 2010.
KPN had previously announced plans to spend from one to 1.5 billion Euros on its All IP program. Once customers and services are successfully migrated to the new network, legacy networks and buildings will be phased out.
Lucent plans to establish a new Next Generation Network Transformation Global Center of Excellence in The Netherlands as part of KPN’s network transformation. The center will deliver services focused on complex network migration challenges and will serve KPN and future customers as a starting point to plan and coordinate network transformation and migration projects. The new center will offer local and virtual support and will also include a fully functional next-generation equipment laboratory. It will offer hands-on training and will also support the creation of methods, procedures and best practices for network transformation and migration operations.
"We have given the prime multi-vendor integration role to Lucent because of its intimate knowledge of the KPN network and proven multi-vendor services capabilities," said Eelco Blok, board member of KPN, who is responsible for the Fixed Division.
"This is one of the world's first major Network Transformation projects that includes a transition of legacy voice services to a next generation broadband IMS based network, and also includes a major overhaul of the access network," said John Meyer, president, Lucent Sales and Services organization. "This agreement is a strong endorsement of our ability to help customers transform their networks and of Lucent's strength as a provider of managed and professional services."
