Alcatel Scores Mobile NGN and GSM Net Contract in China

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

French technology provider Alcatel just scored a contract to deploy a Mobile NGN system for Chinese service provider Jilin Mobile Communications Company (Jilin MCC) and expand the operator's existing mobile network. The contract was won through Alcatel (News - Alert) Shanghai Bell, an Alcatel company in China. The contract is reportedly valued at about $63 million U.S.

The new contract calls for Alcatel to offer Jilin MCC its distributed mobile-switching system including the Alcatel 5020 Spatial Atrium Softswitch, a multi-standard mobile call server controlling distributed media gateways. Once deployed, Alcatel's Mobile NGN solution will enable Jilin Mobile to allow its current network to support future advanced mobile services with one high-capacity core network.

Alcatel will also expand the operator's current Alcatel-powered GSM/GPRS mobile network, providing Jilin Mobile with its Alcatel Evolium multi-standard network infrastructure system. With previous GSM expansion already provided to the operator, Alcatel would have increased Jilin Mobile's mobile network capacity by 30 percent to serve up to 8 million subscribers.

With the completion of this project by this September, Alcatel's system will cover all the cities in Jilin province, including Chuangchun, Jilin, Yanji, Siping, Songyuan, Liaoyun, Baicheng, Baishan and Tonghua.

Alcatel has been making strides in China, as the French technology provider keeps making multiple deals in that country. Indeed, just last Wednesday, the company announced that it was tapped by China Netcom's two subsidiaries Shandong and Shanxi Netcom to expand and optimize their metropolitan networks across the Shandong and Shanxi provinces. The new partnership will enable the telecoms to broaden their IP-based data suite of services by being able to offer triple-play services including voice, data and video.

The new contracts call for Alcatel to deploy its 7750 Service Router (SR) in Qingdao in Shandong and in Changzhi and Jincheng in Shanxi. The companies expect to complete the project by this August. The partnerships will also enable enterprise users to have access to Service Level Agreement (SLA)-based networking services such as Layer 2 Virtual Private LAN service (VPLS) and Layer 3 virtual private networks (VPN), which will be provided with IP/MPLS Quality of Service (QoS).
