Solegy SIP Encryption Circumvents Blocking of SIP Messages

By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Solegy LLC announced it has adopted support for the encryption of SIP messages among its service provider customers, using its ServicePDQ managed platform. The initiative addresses disruptions to VoIP service caused by attempts to block SIP messages and media by network operators throughout the world.

Solegy, a provider of managed service delivery systems, has made the encryption support available immediately. It is designed to work with SIP telephone adapter equipment manufactured by a number of vendors, and also works through software proxies and SIP softphones. The range of deployment options at the customer premises ensures the solution is available to a wide range of users.

The company also plans to release the source code of its encryption module as part of the OpenSIPStack community. The group is a Solegy sponsored open source initiative that provides application developers with a fully compliant and freely available SIP stack. The encryption management module adds value to projects that incorporate a high-performance SIP stack.

“Over the past few months several state-controlled Internet Service Providers have implemented Internet filters designed to block VoIP calls using the SIP protocol,” said Joegen Baclor, Solegy’s head protocol engineer. “With our recent encryption implementation, end-user customers of Solegy powered service providers in a blocked region will still be able to establish SIP sessions to other VoIP users or the PSTN.”
