VoIP Marketing Firm Takes Over MCI Call Center
TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist
VoIP marketing firm TMONE of Iowa is set to announce tomorrow it is occupying a 300-seat facility formally utilized by telecom giant MCI. The firm acquires new subscribers for VoIP service providers.
According to the company's news release, "the 27,000 square foot state of art facility is designed to acquire up to 50,000 telecom and information service subscribers a month at full capacity and support millions of customers."
"The new facility is indicative of the fact that VoIP has transitioned to mass market adoption. IPTV, WiFi and other related technology will follow suit quickly. This sets the stage for true consumer and small business choice in voice and video communications," notes Anthony Marlowe, TMONE's president.
"We are happy to locate ourselves in Iowa City and the old MCI facility is a perfect fit," said John Burchert, COO. "TMONE will be immediately adding over 200 jobs to the Iowa City, Cedar Rapids technology corridor many of which will require the same skill sets as the positions eliminated by MCI. We will continually grow until we level off close to 1000 employees."
MCI has been going through many changes since the end of last year. The telecom giant began to completely migrate its telecommunications to an all-IP network thanks to a partnership announced back in November with Parisian telecom systems provider Alcatel. Alcatel announced that it was tapped by MCI to deploy its signaling server to migrate the carrier's domestic and international SS7 signaling traffic to a packet-based system. The move will assist MCI with its network convergence project.
The partnership will enable MCI to deploy Alcatel's equipment to carry both domestic and international traffic, allowing the carrier's global customers to continue to receive today's telephony services as it migrates to next-gen IP services, and services once it completely migrates to an all-IP network.
"MCI is converging to a common IP core network which will improve resiliency and network utilization," said Joe Cook, senior vice president, MCI Global Network Planning and Engineering. "As today's applications drive larger bandwidth requirements, MCI's customers will be able to take advantage of the scalability Alcatel's packet-based signaling platform provides."
Specifically, supporting both signaling transfer points (STP) and voice-over-IP functionality, the carrier-class and standards-based Alcatel 5070 Signaling Server Global (SSG) will enable MCI to migrate the signaling for voice traffic to a packet-based environment. The Alcatel 5070 SSG receives, routes, and transmits signaling messages for call processing, wireless network services, and intelligent networking services. The Alcatel 5070 SSG combines traditional STP functionality with routing, to support the expanding VoIP and wireless environments.
