ZTE Becomes Leading Provider of 3G Technology
TMCnet Associate Editor
Chinese telecommunications firm Zhongxing Telecom Equipment (ZTE) announced recently that it had won a contract to supply 3G WCDMA mobile phones to 3G operator Hutchison Whampoa Limited.
According to a news release, the first batch of mobile phones, with the united brand of ZTE and Hutchison Whampoa 3G, was shipped to the UK for distribution last week. The shipment further establishes ZTE as a leading provider of 3G technology.
ZTE has established relationships with other leading global telecom carriers including Portugal Telecom Group and France Telecom, giving it a firm foundation for development in the global high-end market.
In other news, China’s demonstration project for supporting a combination of mobile and multimedia services passed a review by experts recently.
The project succeeded in enabling video service on CDMA EV-DO handsets. ZTE provided the project’s core network equipment, CDMA2000. The company is China’s first telecom equipment maker able to provide a CDMA video service solution. ZTE is second only to South Korea’s Samsung in this field.
The project was jointly initiated by the country’s second largest mobile carrier China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom), ZTE and the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.
ZTE also made news last week when it announced plans to offer Internet broadband services over the transmission network of Venezuelan state-owned electricity firm Cadafe.
According to a news release, the plan involves the installation of 9,000 kilometers of fiber along Cadafe’s 115 kilovolt national transmission network.
The Cadafe-ZTE venture will be the first of its kind in Venezuela. Just two months ago Venezuela’s largest private electricity company, U.S. power firm AES, subsidiary EDC, announced it had plans to offer broadband over its distribution network.
Also reported last week, ZTE is ready to deploy its first optical transmission network in Macedonia through a contract with Neocom, the country’s second largest data communication operator.
The network, scheduled for completion in December 2006, will include seven network nodes covering five major cities - Ohrid, Gostivar, Skopje, Stip and Negotino - and will connect Macedonia with its neighboring countries.
According to a news release, the network is based on ZTE’s ZXMP S380 multi-service transport platform and ZXWM M900 DWDM system, which will enable easy access to services like TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) and GE (Gigabit Ethernet), and potential scalability to 10G capacity.
