Grandstream Announces Availability of IP Multimedia Device

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

Grandstream Networks (News - Alert), a manufacturer of next-generation IP voice, video and IP-PBX (News - Alert) products, today announced the general availability of the GXV3140 IP Multimedia Phone, a new broadband IP multimedia phone that blends Web and social multimedia applications with real-time IP video and voice calling.

Company officials will highlight the new offering as part of its exhibit in booth # 418 at Technology Marketing Corporation’s Internet Telephony Conference and Expo (ITEXPO (News - Alert)) West 2009, which runs today through Sept. 3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The GXV3140, pictured below, lets consumers and small to medium-size businesses take advantage of the cost-effectiveness of voice and video over Internet Protocol to make free video calls worldwide and to strengthen relationships with businesses and friends. The always-on GXV3140 includes an integrated Web browser giving users one-touch access to RSS feeds, such as news updates, stock updates, weather forecasts, Internet radio stations, social networking sites and streaming Internet entertainment sites like YouTube.

“The integration of multimedia and video conference in an IP phone device lets anyone with broadband access enjoy the power of some PC-grade social multimedia applications and the always-on convenience of the home telephone,” said David Li (News - Alert), CEO, Grandstream Networks, in a statement. “With the built-in free, peer-to-peer video calling capability, the GXV3140 allows people to easily and economically stay in close face-to-face contact with family, friends and business associates.”

Once reserved for larger businesses that could afford the high equipment and network access costs, video conferencing is now becoming more prevalent. With more than half of U.S. adults, 57 percent, have broadband access to their home, the Internet makes it easy to deliver real-time video and Web entertainment to enhance people’s lives, Grandstream Networks (News - Alert) said.

Grandstream’s GXV3140 delivers face-to-face video calling over broadband with “IP Video Talk,” embedded software in the phone that offers free peer-to-peer calling out. The device is portable and
lets users take it wherever there is a broadband connection.  It can also be plugged into a computer or TV for larger pictures.

"The GXV3140 Multimedia Phone is a top of the line choice for a desktop video and multimedia phone," said Mike Evanisko, vice president of technology at 888VoipStore, in a statement. "With its high quality audio and video, simple configuration, and built-in IPVideoTalk for free peer-to-peer calling, the GXV3140 finally brings affordable desktop video and multimedia to the consumer and SMB market spaces."

GrandStream’s offering is the latest in media phones. Perhaps what will differentiate it from others is price. The GXV3140 is available for $299, a price that competes with other new “consumer-oriented” media phones, but is significantly lower than other “business” media phones entering the market,” Sandra M. Gustavsen, an analyst at T3i Group LLC, said.

“The media phone market, for both businesses and consumers, seems poised to take off with a number of communications vendors introducing new media phones this year for the home or office,”  Gustavsen said in a statement. “While one can see the many benefits in combining a telephone with video and Internet content, the phone’s price will be a key factor in our current economy.”

Grandstream is taking part in the current ITEXPO happening now in Los Angeles, Calif., where officials are demonstrating the new multimedia device that complement their existing product line. Check them out at booth #418.
