Those Clever Cable Companies
Years go, we thought cable companies would never get into Voice over IP (or "digital voice" as they call it), since they were taking their time, apparently testing their systems to death. Cable companies are now the innovative dominators of advanced communications. Just as we were getting used to triple play (voice, IPTV and data), cablecos are now springing quad-play onto us, which is triple play plus mobile phone service that will enable your cell phone to receive mobile video, voicemail and email. It's a concept that was pioneered by Comcast with its "Pivot" joint venture with Sprint Nextel. Users will see even more new services for cable companies that seamlessly exchange information and work with each other under the control of the user. And it will all be covered on just one monthly bill.
Selecting Hosted IP
Fact is, for years there has been a huge economics and scalability argument over why small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) should be using hosted IP Communications services, or else "managed" services (where some equipment is housed at the customer premise but a provider comes in and takes care of it, "as if it wasn't there"). And now, even some enterprises are using hosted services for branch offices and isolated workgroups. Perhaps their big IT staffs will go the way of three-pack carbon paper? A look at the latest and greatest services and what to look for in a service.
How to Resell VoIP Products and Services
We're now in an age where service providers can supply rebranded services for small telcos and cablecos, and when unified communications is reaching out to back-office equipment and applications, value-added resellers (VARs) and integrators are facing new challenges. Many of them must educate their customers as to what can be done with their existing systems, and yet many other resellers need some enlightening as well. Fortuanately, as equipment and services become less expensive and easier to use, the support burden eases up on operators, vendors and resellers alike.
Femtocells
Imagine a tiny cellular base station in your home. No more complaining about bad mobile services coverage. It's available now and it's giving WiFi a run for its money. Sprint has already deployed a femtocell service in select markets, countering T-Mobile’s competing unlicensed mobile access (UMA) technology.
