Mobility, the cloud, millennials and a plethora of devices have all wreaked havoc on the traditional workforce. A new breed of workers is transforming business culture, demanding a better work/life balance. That balance often involves being able to work remotely, using whatever device makes the most sense to get the job done.

For businesses and executives, this evolving workforce presents some unique management challenges. Fortunately, mobile workforce management (MWM) tools are designed to rein in an increasingly dispersed workforce and help managers keep tabs on employees, devices and technologies. A growing component of the larger workforce optimization software industry, MWM solutions comprise software and services designed to manage employees outside the company premises.

Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) forecasts growth in the North American MWM market, but also indicates it is in a state of flux. Ongoing technology advances, a transforming workforce and customer demand are driving uptake and revenues. MWM solutions not only manage remote workers, but also locate, automate and optimize mobile workers and their tasks. The global market opportunity is massive, as a growing number of managers realize the benefits of using MWM solutions to manage their remote workforce.

IDC (News - Alert) put the U.S. mobile workforce at 96.2 million in 2015, and estimates it will top 105 million by the end of 2020. That same year, mobile workers are expected to comprise 72 percent of the total U.S. workforce, creating significant demand for MWM tools and offerings. The benefits are already apparent, with 69 percent of enterprises with mobile workers experiencing a reduction in CAPEX or OPEX (News - Alert) in 2015 as a direct result of BYOD programs.

According to a recent Salesforce.com article, clear, reliable communication channels, easy access to data, and asset coordination are the key elements of a successful remote workforce. A comprehensive MWM solution should address these factors while also measuring and analyzing data and metrics on productivity and remote worker impact on business operations and customers.

The workforce is going to continue to transform as mobility and other trends become the norm. Businesses and managers will need to change their management tactics to stay on top of an increasingly remote workforce, and MWM tools are an ideal way to keep up with monitoring and management.
