Managing the Workforce: It's Never Easy to Say Goodbye
Workforce management is a broad term. The function includes everything a business needs to ensure its employees are working and productive. What it also includes, however, are the difficult tasks of on-boarding and firing staff.
Even with all of the top workforce management tools running and your company gaining benefit, there will sometimes be an employee who just doesn’t quite fit into the culture of the company. Poor performance, trouble responding to training and other issues can creep in that make it a bad business decision to keep said employee on the payroll.
In this case, a decision to terminate the employee is made. But simply telling someone they are no longer needed isn’t how it should be done.
Performance reports, call monitoring solutions and a host of other tools give managers the insight into what’s happening behind the scenes that’s leaving an employee behind the rest of the team. On-demand training and coaching delivered on time to agents in a call center, for example, has shown to increase success rates and even boost morale.
But when all options have been exhausted and it’s time do the firing, there is a right and a wrong way to do it.
This post takes a look at the key factors to consider and steps to take when it comes time to handle this not so fun task in your workplace.
As with any situation, you’ll want to wait it out and not react and immediately terminate. As a manager, you should work with the HR department on the specific issues and how they have been handled in the past. The last thing you’ll want to open the company up to is grounds for a lawsuit if the idea that unfair treatment has occurred.
The same is true when it comes to being open and honest with employees about their performance metrics and the things they’ll need to do better to keep their job. If there is solid proof of the poor performance or even an agreement around meeting those goals, there is a better chance to be protected should future accusations arise.
Taking the proper steps to ensure you’re doing the hiring and firing right at your company is just a small piece of managing the workforce. Making use of the right tools is a great way to keep your team working efficiently and happily.
