In a significant announcement for not only the company involved but for the wireless industry in general, ADTRAN (News - Alert), provider of cloud based, virtual WLAN and enterprise communications, has recently announced the world’s first cloud-based mobile data offload solution.

Created to address the demand for mobile data network usage, ADTRAN’s virtualized approach eliminates the need for hardware-based controllers in the network, which will adhere to the upcoming Wi-Fi Alliance (News - Alert) Hotspot 2.0 standard.

Not only will ADTRAN’s mobile data offload solution address the demand for mobile usage, it will also significantly reduce cost, complexity, and help to manage the overhead associated with scaling network access.

By combining ADTRAN’s Bluesocket virtual WLAN capabilities with its mobile backhaul solution, the new solution can be integrated into any network topology providing a highly available and scalable answer for overtaxed mobile networks. According to ADTRAN, the solution also addresses each area of network congestion for the carrier, which includes cellular backhaul, Radio Access Network and enterprise access, and provides the means to eliminate the log jam created by the rapid rise in mobile data traffic.

Features of ADTRAN’s new mobile data offload solution will include a distributed data plane and centralized control plane that will allow thousands of access points to be managed by a single software-based controller as well as hosted/managed enterprise Wi-Fi, mobile offload, smart metering and other Wi-Fi-enabled services.

It will also provide carrier Ethernet service delivery with optional powering over bonded copper pairs to provide high-bandwidth backhaul and power to outdoor access points and geographically-separated controllers that offer zero packet-loss during controller failover.

By utilizing ADTRAN’s virtual WLAN offerings, access points can communicate directly with AAA systems for user authentication, either fully integrated or via certified partnerships using a feature set with Y.1731 SLA monitoring integrated access point monitoring and wireline backhaul monitoring systems.

Over the next several months, ADTRAN will advance its offering through key partnerships with other leading suppliers, system integrators and solution providers.
