19% of American Adults Have Tried Video Calling, Conferencing or Video Chats

By Gary Kim, Contributing Editor

About 19 percent of American adults have tried video calling either online or using their mobile phones, according to the Pew (News - Alert) Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.

About 17 percent of respondents to the Pew survey say they have made a video or teleconferencing call online, while six percent of  adults say they have used a mobile device to do so.

The survey suggests 23 percent of Internet users and seven percent of mobile phone owners have participated in video calls, chats, or teleconferences.

The survey of 3,001 adults also found that 74 percent of American adults are Internet users. The survey also found that 85 percent of American adults have mobile phones. The Pew survey also found that 74 percent of mobile device owners use text messaging features, 39 percent use their phones to access the internet, 34 percent use them for email, and 30 percent use them for instant messaging.

Video calling online is especially appealing to upscale users, the study suggests. A third of internet users (34 percent) living in households earning $75,000 or above have participated in such calls or chats, compared with 18 percent of those earning less than $75,000.

Younger Internet users are considerably more likely to conduct video calls. Some 29 percent of Internet users ages 18 to 29 have participated in video calls or chats or teleconferences, compared with 15 percent of Internet users age 65 or older.

Urban Internet users (27 percent) and suburban users (23 percent) are significantly more likely than rural users (12 percent) to have participated in video calls, chats, or teleconferences.

On a typical day, some four percent of Internet users participate in video calls, chats, or teleconferences, up from about two percent in 2009.
