Vidyo, Intel Team to Demo Transcoding-Less Videoconference across Multiple Compute Products, Devices

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

Provider of personal telepresence Vidyo has said that it recently showcased its ability to integrate high definition (HD) multipoint videoconferencing seamlessly across multiple compute products and devices using Intel (News - Alert) processors -- the new Atom Z6xx based platform, and the all new 2010 Intel Core processor family -- over the public Internet and wireless networks.

Vidyo (News - Alert) has partnered with Intel on a breakthrough demonstration at Computex, extending VidyoConferencing on desktops and telepresence systems to full integration with handheld and telematic devices, said Ofer Shapiro (News - Alert), CEO and co-founder of Vidyo,

Intel demonstrated a business quality, multiparty videoconference over a wireless network, highlighting the advantages of the three spatial layers of the VidyoTechnology H.264 SVC codec capability. Company officials said that this enabled the architecture to connect devices ranging in performance, from telepresence rooms to smartphones, without transcoding.

The demo featured a high-end VidyoRoom HD-220 encoding 1080p connected through a general purpose IP network to a VidyoRouter. Company officials said that each device in the conference, including the smartphone, only receive the resolution it can render.

Thanks to Vidyo's "innovative" approach, bandwidth is conserved. Company officials said that since there is no transcoding in the network, interaction is natural because no latency is introduced.

Additional devices that were connected to the conference included a tablet, an in-vehicle infotainment system, a netbook and a laptop computer. Company officials said that this demonstrated that Vidyo performs across a range of computing products and devices.

Shapiro said that multipoint videoconferencing, with this range of devices requires new capabilities to deliver business quality video for smartphones and tablets. "Vidyo and Intel are working together to ensure VidyoConferencing will perform across a range of Intel Architecture-based platforms and a variety of software platforms, including Windows, Mac OS, MeeGo and Android (News - Alert) operating systems."

VidyoTechnology uses off-the-shelf Intel Architecture-based platforms that enable it to take advantage of intelligent multi-core technology. Company officials said that the Vidyo architecture is the only multipoint videoconferencing SDK that does not transcode, yet delivers rate matching without adding latency.

"The video conferencing capability, based on Vidyo's technologies, is an innovative solution that can scale across a range of device segments and software environments," said Pankaj Kedia, director of global ecosystem programs for Ultra Mobility Group at Intel Corp.

Earlier this year in April, Vidyo announced that it became the first to deliver telepresence to executive desktops in a touch screen form factor.
