Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone systems are quickly taking over the business world and even the residential phone market as they offer a cheaper alternative phone service that uses the Internet instead of traditional phone networks to deliver higher quality telephony with far less infrastructure.
It almost sounds like it's too good to be true, and if you believed the many rumors about VoIP that exist to this day then it would be. However most of the problems that plagued VoIP phone systems are now in the past, particularly in thanks to faster Internet speeds as well as better VoIP technology.
According to Telecomreseller.com, a recent survey conducted by the VoIP and telecom consulting firm Software Advice revealed that disinformation about VoIP is still rampant. The survey asked consumers between ages 25 and 34 several questions about VoIP solutions, of which 71 percent were unable to actually define VoIP. Some 55 percent claimed not even to know what VoIP was.
However, those that did know of VoIP still voiced incorrect fears about the platform. The top two concerns with VoIP phone systems were maintaining a dial tone during a power outage and reduced call quality. While these fears held true in the past, modern Internet routers (necessary for VoIP service) now draw so little power that they can utilize back-up emergency batteries to maintain a signal, and call quality with today's VoIP is in fact unparalleled with other voice communication services.
The simple fact is that VoIP phones offer more phone service for less money, which is impossible to overlook. Even fears like being unable to use VoIP with mobile phones and the need for specialized hardware being blown out of the water, disinformation is still the biggest obstacle VoIP still has to taking over the general telecommunications market.
