Endstream's Levitt Discusses VoIP Termination Issues

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

TMC's (News - Alert) Stefania Viscusi recently had the chance to sit down and talk with Eric Levitt, CEO at Endstream Communications (News - Alert), a VoIP and telecom carrier offering VoIP termination services.

Levitt explained that VoIP termination is the ability to complete a VoIP call over a public or private network.

"It requires that both the customer and the carrier have VoIP enabled equipment, capable of taking a digital or an analog signal and translating them into IP," Levitt said.

This, he said, can be done either on the customer's PBX (News - Alert), or a digital or analog gateway. IT-enabled carriers, such as Endstream, he said, "can usually provide that equipment if the customer doesn't already have it on their IP PBX." After that, all it takes is a broadband connection, or a private IP connection, he said, from your VoIP carrier.

Beyond that, it's important to have a reliable Internet or data connection for a VoIP network to operate properly.

When it comes to VoIP termination services, some of the key benefits businesses should be aware of, he said, are that VoIP customers are typically eligible for lower rates, because VoIP infrastructure is less expensive for the carrier to maintain and deploy. "A good quality VoIP call can be as good or better than a traditional analog call, and sometimes even better than a digital call," he said.

VoIP equipment is easier to deploy for customers because they only need to maintain a single plant for network infrastructure, he noted, adding that because of the nature of IP networks, "it's easier to centralize the PBX across an enterprise, and even centralize inbound trunks from carriers."

Levitt said Endstream is differentiated from the competition due to their ability to offer retail customers "very competitive rates," due to the lack of the high overhead of their larger competitors. He also pointed to the very reliable service over their Internet backbone, and to options ranging up to gigabyte Ethernet.
