The arrival of Caller ID gave us tremendous flexibility in our ability to either take a call or let it go to voicemail. We could also mentally prepare for a call from someone before actually picking up the phone. Today, we rarely have calls without Caller ID, but does the capability transfer easily to the VoIP switch?

The topic leads to an ongoing industry challenge surrounding secure Caller ID, as the IETF group is working to develop a new open standard. This work, according to a Circle ID post, has led to the creation of STIR, the Secure Telephone Identity Revisited group, officially chartered within the IETF.

Those interested in the topic gathered in Berlin, Germany at the IETF 87 meeting to measure the level of interest in the topic. The group also discussed whether or not the problem of a secure Caller ID could actually be addressed within the context of the IETF. The outcome of this gathering led to the creation of the new group as excited individuals determined that work could and would be done.

Aggressive milestones have been established for the group and heavy mailing list discussions are expected in the near future. Anyone can join and contribute to the mailing list and those interested in helping define an open standard for the secure method of origination identification for SIP-based VoIP are invited to participate. In fact, anyone with value to contribute to the discussion and development are strongly encouraged to get on board.

As companies and consumers alike continue to adopt VoIP and the VoIP switch for its low-cost communications strategy, easy-to-integrate approach to unified communications and streamlined strategies, there is a growing demand for innovative technologies to support advancements in this area. A secure Caller ID is just another item on the list of wants to bring VoIP alongside the same level of trust and reliability as the standard landline.

The fact that this development is being approached as an open standard is even better for consumers and providers alike. The technology will continue to evolve and improve without considerable costs, while still creating opportunities.
