VoIP Switch - Working Over the Holiday? VoIP Can Help

July 03, 2013

Some of my friends and family take pity on me: I have the reputation for working during family vacations.

My friends and family think I’m an industrious worker due to this constant interface with my business, but they also take pity on me. Who wants to work over a holiday?

While it is true that a vacation unmarred by work would be nice, it also is true that it is easier than ever to painlessly work from the road. I’ll be working this 4th of July vacation, but it will be a lot more seamless than it was just five years ago.

That’s because Voice over IP (and my laptop) has helped make my office portable.

While everyone talks about the cost savings of VoIP as the reason for switching from traditional telephony, for my money, it is the mobility that makes VoIP so special.

With VoIP, a worker who happens to be slaving away over the holidays no longer needs to be IN the office, so there’s more opportunity for participating in family vacation events. That’s because VoIP forwards calls to any phone number, so it is easy enough to flick a switch and have my business calls arrive to my hotel or personal cell phone (or be accessed through a web interface, even, if I’m traveling abroad and don’t want to pay high international calling rates).

It means that a worker doesn’t have to disrupt his normal workflow at all, in fact, because I don’t even have to leave that “I’m on vacation, call my personal cell if it is an emergency” message. With VoIP, I just leave town for a family vacation, and my work line follows me. Nobody has to know that I’m working from a barbeque (except for the fact that it is the 4th of July and I’m leaving a work voicemail).

It is even easy to integrate VoIP with my personal cell phone, too, because many providers now have apps that I can run right from my phone. This lets me make work calls from my cell phone even more easily.

One advantage of leveraging a VoIP smartphone app is that a worker slaving over the holidays doesn’t have to tote around his address book or copy key contact numbers. With a VoIP app, all my business contacts and entire call history are available from the app, truly giving me a seamless work experience.

Thanks to VoIP, I can also turn off work when I’m on vacation. I may be working over the holidays, but I still want some boundaries; there are definite hours when I don’t want to work, including during the family sailing trip and in the evening when we’re having dinner. Sure, I look like a workaholic when I take a business call at the kitchen table, but really it is just sad. This is when my family has a legitimate reason to pity me.

VoIP Switch - VoIP Comes of Age in the Enterprise

Traditional phone lines might have their place in a highly connected society, but the truth of the matter is, to stay afloat in a competitive business landscape, one needs a bit more than a plain old telephone system (POTS).
