Broadcom (News - Alert), a semiconductor specialist, recently revealed that it will soon be unveiling a new voice over internet protocol (VoIP) switch system. With the growth of mobile device use straining networks, the new line will specifically be targeted for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs).
The StrataConnect Series, Broadcom’s new line of switch system-on-a-chip (SoC), will allow for the Layer 2 and Layer 3’s to combine and with the growing number of VoIP deployments, the StrataConnect Series will feature advanced security. The new series will have four new switches, BCM53333, BCM BCM53334, BCM53344 and the BCM53346, which will sample volume production for the first half of 2013.
The new SoC will also feature LED intensity controls along with an ARM (News - Alert)-based CPU on-chip. Other main features will include scalable table sizes, 16 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) physical layer transceivers (PHYs), 10 GbE and high-performance CPU units.
"For small to medium businesses, cloud services have quickly become a critical way to deliver leading technology without the complexity of big IT," said Derek Lam, Netgear (News - Alert) vice president of Engineering, SMB Switching and Wireless, in a statement. "As a result, scalable switching solutions with advanced features are now more important than ever. It is essential that semiconductor suppliers address these trends with products optimized for SMB networks."
