Voice over LTE (News - Alert) (VoLTE) paves the way for new trends in telecommunications. Undoubtedly, this next-generation technology will help several voice core equipment markets including VoIP switch to expand.

The world recently witnessed the first commercial launch of VoLTE. These deployments happened in South Korea and U.S. network equipment major Ericsson played a key role in these deployments.

The VoLTE services were launched in South Korea by SK Telecom (News - Alert) and LG U+, while MetroPCS pioneered the services in the U.S.

Prior to VoLTE making its debut, operators used LTE networks only for data and depended on 2G and 3G networks for voice services. Yet, this newly introduced connectivity will provide operators with a comprehensive set of globally standardized, telecom grade quality services to combine with high-speed mobile broadband services. Customers will benefit from telecom-grade HD voice, video calling and other new and richer communication services on LTE smartphones.

Running VoLTE is also more spectral efficient compared to running voice over 2G or 3G, which provides an opportunity for better radio resources utilization when deploying mobile broadband.

Ericsson (News - Alert) supported the VoLTE commercial launch by offering products and services including its multimedia telephony application server, evolved packet core, LTE radio access network, OSS and other services.

"I congratulate all these operators on this great achievement," Johan Wibergh (News - Alert), head of Business Unit Networks at Ericsson, said in a statement. "Telecom grade telephony is going all-IP over commercial mobile broadband LTE networks for the first time. This is a historic moment in the telecom industry.

"We see increasing operator interest in VoLTE globally, and we expect broader market take-off in 2013," Wibergh added.

At this time, Ericsson is continuously engaging in interoperability tests with major chipset and device vendors to ensure interoperability and commercial readiness of its VoLTE devices and networks globally.
