In an announcement made at the PTC conference at Honolulu, Hawaii, XConnect (News - Alert) , the world’s first and largest provider of ‘Plug and Peer’ Voice over IP (VoIP) federation-based interconnection services, launched the production of its Direct Route services, thus enabling wholesale carriers to profit from Layer 5 VoIP Peering (News - Alert).

Direct route encourages different wholesale carriers to terminate calls directed towards XConnect ENUM registry numbers at the terminating service provider’s network directly. Some benefits include lower per minute costs and better quality, eliminating the unnecessary transit operators and associated PSTN/VoIP gateways. The other advantage is that it offers opportunities to VoIP Service providers for revenue generation, enabling them to receive calls directly from the wholesale carriers into their infrastructure. They can, in turn, collect fees on inbound calls. This service promises benefits for all.

Addressing the conference, Eli Katz, CEO of XConnect (News - Alert) said, “The launch of our Direct Route leverages our unique ENUM Registry and VoIP Peering platform to build on our XConnect Global Alliance TM settlement-free VoIP federations and deliver compelling benefits to both the carriers and VoIP service providers managing PSTN-to-VoIP calls.”

Further enumerating the benefits, he added, “Wholesale carriers can dramatically reduce termination costs on calls destined for numbers in the XConnect Registry, and VoIP service providers can increase ARPU by monetizing inbound calls to their subscribers.”

To avail this golden opportunity and cash in on the advantages, several leading international carriers have joined hands with XConnect. Bezeq International Limited, the leader in telecommunications in Israel, Touchstone (News - Alert) Systems, Inc., leader in VoIP product delivery with its customer base in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East and Interoute, Europe’s fastest growing communication technology provider, are all lined up as its prospective high profile customers.

Carriers implement a query of the XConnectENUM Registry, by checking which of its calls are destined for registered subscribers. These are delivered directly, at a lower cost into the network of the applicable service provider. This saves one with the unnecessary transit steps and quality degradation.

This feature enables VoIP service providers, forming the XConnect global alliance, to extract revenues from this service without bearing the costs of installation and integration of new technology.

Future beneficiaries of this service expressed their excitement over the tie-up with the telecom leader and the cost reducing that has resulted. It has enhanced the quality properties this service holds and can be extended to their respective consumers.

John Wilkinson, director of voice services for Interoute in London, UK, said, “Interoute is excited about integrating XConnect’s DirectRoute service and to have XConnect join our Arena program.” While citing the advantages this would bring to its customers, he added, “By enabling our Arena service customers to seamlessly access the XConnect registry, we expect them to be able to leverage the Federation paradigm to reduce termination costs and deliver high quality service to their end-customers.”

Vice President at Bezeq International , based in Tel Aviv, Israel, Nissan Arie agreed with his counterpart. He said, “We are excited to begin routing calls to XConnect's registry via the DirectRoute service.”

Referring to the growing popularity and usage of VoIP services, he stated, “VoIP Peering is a valuable new technology for reducing costs and increasing the quality of service we offer our global customer base.”

Furthering his confrere’s point of view, Mark Baker, CEO of Dallas, Texas-based Touchstone Systems Inc., said, “Touchstone is so committed to the VoIP revolution that we dedicate100 percent of our efforts to VoIP session management and back-office products. We believe XConnect’s DirectRoute is a powerful driver of that VoIP revolution.”

What’s the number one VoIP conference in terms of attendance? What’s the leading VoIP expo for exhibitors in terms of lead generation? And which VoIP industry event will feature special attractions for service providers, resellers, and the enterprise and SMB market, as well as an overview on the future of IP Telephony? Answer: INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO EAST, January 23–26, 2007. See you in sunny Ft. Lauderdale!
