GL Communications Expands MAPS Platform with Channel Associated Signaling Protocol Emulator

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

GL Communications (News - Alert), a supplier of test, monitoring, and analysis equipment for TDM, Wireless, IP and VoIP management and monitoring, has introduced the addition of Channel Associated Signaling (CS) Protocol Emulator to GL's Message Automation and Protocol Simulation (MAPS) platform.

MAPS is a protocol simulation and conformance test tool that supports protocols such as SIP, MEGACO, MGCP, SS7, ISDN, GSM, MAP, CAS, LTE (News - Alert), UMTS, SS7 SIGTRAN, ISDN SIGTRAN, SIP I, GSM AoIP, Diameter and many others.

In Channel Associated Signaling, a channel or timeslot carrying speech also carries with it the signaling and addressing to set up and tear down calls, according to Jagdish Vadalia senior manager for product development. The supervisory signaling is carried as “onhook” or “offhook”. The addressing is carried as DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Frequency) or as MF (Multi Frequency).

According to GL, Channel Associated Signaling can be used to route calls on the public switched telephone network (PSTN) including subscriber lines like 2wire local loops, on trunks between central offices (CO), and on access trunks such as PBX (News - Alert). Some of the popular CAS signaling methods include Loop Start, Wink Start, R1, MFC-R2, SS5, among other variants.

Additionally, MAPS CAS Emulator tool is used to perform testing using CAS signaling and transmission and detection of TDM traffic over T1 E1 using scripts. It offers a complete solution for testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of devices and networks implementing CAS.

According to Vadalia, CAS Emulator automates the testing procedure with ready scripts for inbound and outbound calls. Calls are established, once the signaling information such as signaling bits, DTMF/MF digits, or Tones are sent or detected.

Some of the features of the new emulator include Automated CAS signaling simulation over TDM (E1 T1), support for Multiple T1 E1 line interfaces, remote access to T1 (or E1) analyzer, support for ANI and DID identification, customized signaling for each channel through scripts and more.
