Things to Consider before VoIP Management

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Companies are moving away from their traditional phone systems to VoIP solutions because they can save money with every call they make. And, what was once a communication platform that left many wondering about their call quality has evolved into the communication channel of choice.

According to this SMEWEB article, the economy is showing recovery, but companies are still keeping tight control of their bottom line. Communications, including telecommunications, are an important and expensive aspect of many enterprises. Keeping a lid on the monthly expenses in this area of the budget is a necessity, and it’s becoming easier with the development of VoIP technology.

Companies tied to the century-old technology of traditional phone systems are missing out on the savings and communication features available in VoIP management solutions. There are some things to consider before you switch over to VoIP, however. The first is to ask questions. Any telecommunications vendor worth your time will offer exhaustive answers to your every question.

Study your phone bills and see where the charges are coming from and how much you are using your phone system. How many of those calls are international and how many are mobile? You might not know it, but going to a system with VoIP management, you can save up to 50 percent on those international calls.

Look at your plans for future growth and find a VoIP management solution that can scale as you flex. If you see expansion, pick a VoIP vendor that will expand with you at no extra cost. As you’re asking questions you might be reminded, through the constant use of industry speak, that you are a newbie in this field. But don’t be discouraged by the technical jargon. VoIP is simply a system that delivers voice communication and data capabilities over the Internet.

And finally, as you’re considering VoIP management solutions, consider the requirements of your workers. How many of your employees work from their desks only and how many are required to go mobile? Consider solutions that allow your workers to do their jobs in the office, the home, or at remote locations.

Using the technologies found in VoIP systems, companies are suddenly finding themselves able to match the tools used by bigger companies. These tools include audio conferencing, interactive virtual receptionists, call recording, and call routing are just a few examples of how you can leverage VoIP systems to take your telecommunications to another level.

Companies enjoy the scalability that VoIP management solutions offer, which includes SIP channel additions that can be added or removed as you see fit. On top of these tools that help you operate a more smooth and efficient business is the cost savings that are drives more and more companies to VoIP management by the day.
