In today’s society, technology is constantly changing. As new forms of technology are created to facilitate business operations, it can become difficult for companies to adapt their old practices to the new. That’s where VoIP gateways come in. A VoIP gateway acts as a bridge between classic telephony technology and new VoIP technology, thus allowing the old to communicate with the new. This bridge is especially useful when it comes to voice and fax compression/decompression, packetization, call routing, and control signaling.

beroNet, a German manufacturer of ISDN, analog, hybrid and GSM VoIP access technologies, has become a major player in the VoIP space. Due to the fact that comprehension is the VoIP gateway’s biggest enemy when it comes to adoption, the company prides itself on providing VoIP gateways that are easy to use and understand. The worldwide first cloud managed beroNet gateways and appliances can be easily administrated and are remote controlled via cloud, making them ideally adaptable to different client requirements.

With so many changes in technology, it’s more important than ever for VoIP gateways to be integrated into business operations. Will 2017 be the year this technology takes off? TMC (News - Alert) recently caught up with beroNet CEO Christian Richter to discuss this question, along with his predictions for 2017 and thoughts on the past year.

What’s in store for 2017? Any new products (teaser information you can provide?), events, etc. or something you’re excited for in the market?

We expect 2017 to be a big year for beroNet. We plan to release the next generation of VoIP Gateway (News - Alert) technology: cloud managed and monitored devices able to run apps using expandable memory. We will be entering the North and South American markets with this device and presenting it for the first time at ITEXPO in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Also, we plan to release the next generation of our beroNet Appliance, which will use much more of the power of virtualization for telephony systems.

Are there any upcoming challenges you predict your company or the market will have to face in 2017?

We are a new player in the Americas, so our main challenge will be to become known in the market. We will need to learn a lot, but we have the chance to start from scratch and be better than our competitors.

What do you think it will take for VoIP gateways to really take off in 2017?

I think it is important that devices built for business use have some kind of sustainability. What I mean with that is that the first function of the VoIP Gateway would be to convert from legacy networks to VoIP networks, but when that function is not needed anymore the Gateway can be equipped with different modules and enhanced by apps, so that it becomes an SBC connecting multiple VoIP networks. Later on, a PBX (News - Alert) core could be installed to replace the entire local phone-system infrastructure.

Looking back at 2016, what are some highlights from the year for your company? New products, awards, company events, etc.?

With 2016 came the release of our all-in-one Telephony Appliance 2.0 running the beroNet Hypervisor. With the new Appliance our customers are able to virtualize multiple systems (IP PBX, CRM, Firewall/Router) and use the integrated VoIP Gateway to connect the installed IP PBX to PRI, BRI, FXS, FXO and GSM technologies. In 2016 the Telephony Appliance 2.0 received a German award as the “most innovative Telecommunication solution” in 2016.

We also released a major update to the operating system running on beroNet VoIP Gateways; introducing a responsive WEB GUI and some additional features designed to make installation easier and faster.

Were there any obstacles or challenges your company or the market as a whole faced in 2016?

In Europe we're in the middle of a move from a legacy ISDN-based network towards a VoIP network. At the same time, Cloud PBX vendors have gained a lot of attention. We see many challenges when it comes to compatibility of telephony equipment and bandwidth but also a lack of know-how in the field. In our view this is a big chance for VoIP Gateway vendors.

Can you talk about some of the top VoIP gateway trends and innovations from this past year?

The biggest trend is to keep them simple. Most VoIP gateway vendors have invested a lot in simplifying their gateway-usage.

You’re going to be at ITEXPO (News - Alert) in February. Can you talk a little about your participation at the event? What will you be showcasing?

This will be our first time exhibiting at the ITEXPO and we will be presenting the next generation of VoIP Gateway technology. We will show the benefits of managing the devices via the beroNet Cloud and how to make money by adding apps to the gateway. We will also show our Appliance with its Hypervisor and how it is harmonized in the family of Cloud-Managed devices.
