Lantiq (News - Alert), a supplier of broadband access and home networking technologies, launched its new single chip VRX220 entry-level xDSL home gateway System-on-Chip or SoC family. This will help deliver feature rich VDSL gateways to customers and to telecom operators at reduced costs.
Dirk Wieberneit, senior vice president and general manager of the broadband business unit at Lantiq, said, “Continued advances in copper and hybrid copper/fiber technology strengthen the economics for carriers to extend the life of their existing networks by further investing in VDSL.”
The VRX220 entry-level xDSL home gateway is designed to optimally balance carrier needs for broadband gateway functionality. The new chip is compatible with VDSL/ADSL lines in the field and is certified to ensure full interoperability. This allows telecom carriers to use the new gateway design to deliver broadband data to subscribers.
The other features of the VRX220 are the small form factor reference gateways that are provided on a two-layer PCB with fast Ethernet LAN ports, 802.11n wireless LAN and carrier-grade VoIP. As the solution also comprises a seamless networking software package with routing, firewall and QoS, and TR-69 remote configuration it will serve as an optimized solution for telecom operators.
The field proven vectoring support in the gateway chip will ensure compatibility with next generation networks as well. At the same time it is fully backwards compatible with all types of VDSL/ADSL lines and is fully interoperable with them. Also no hardware investments are required.
The new VRX220 chipset family will allow carriers to leverage a common software platform and a family of devices encompassing entry level VDSL gateways to high-end media gateways that are based on feature-rich CPE chips. It has become easier to migrate from ADSL to VDSL and beyond for entry DSL gateways. Telecom operators can now deliver feature-rich customer premise gateways to their customers cost effectively.
Recently Lantiq and ASSIA Inc., a solutions company for broadband service providers, announced a collaboration and cross-license agreement for the management of vectored systems. The combination of DSL Expresse Smart Vectoring management software with Lantiq vectored VDSL chipsets enables broadband service providers to automatically plan, predict, manage and optimize the performance of their vectored VDSL networks, thereby ensuring the best possible customer experience and maximizing their return on investment.
