Ikanos and D-Link Help Chunghwa Telecom Deploy Ultra-Fast Multimedia Services

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Ikanos Communications, a provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, and D-Link Corporation, a provider of advanced communications solutions, announced that Chunghwa Telecom has selected Ikanos (News - Alert)-based network equipment from D-Link for ultra-fast multimedia service deployment.

A leading telecommunications operator in Taiwan, Chunghwa Telecom selected Ikanos-based VDSL2 central office or "CO" products and customer premises equipment or "CPE" from D-Link (News - Alert) for its high-speed multimedia service deployments.

Chunghwa Telecom is using Ikanos-based modems and Internet protocol digital subscriber line access multiplexers or "IP DSLAMs" in its next-generation multimedia network deployment, planned for roll out in the second half of 2010, company officials said.

"Ikanos' advanced communications processor and broadband DSL CO chipsets were the ideal choice for our next-generation of VDSL2 network equipment," Anny Wei, president of D-Link Taiwan, said. "The highly integrated Vx180 communications processor provides all the processing power Chunghwa Telecom (News - Alert) needs to deploy a variety of high bandwidth applications."

Further the innovative line-stabilizing technology of the CO chipsets enable D-Link's current generation platforms to provide high quality fiber-like delivery of premium services over VDSL2 networks, regardless of adverse line conditions, Wei added. "Both devices are enabling D-Link's equipment to support all VDSL profiles including 30 MHz."

By using fiber and VDSL2, Chunghwa Telecom is able to cost-effectively and expediently upgrade its network to offer revenue enhancing triple play services such as such as online gaming, Voice over Internet protocol or "VoIP," high speed data and multi-channel high-definition IPTV (News - Alert), company officials added.

D-Link selected the Fusiv Vx180 communications processor for integration into its most advanced VDSL2 modem, the DSL-6541K. Ikanos' Fusiv Vx180 is a low-power, single-chip communications processor that incorporates a MIPS-based CPU core capable of 500 MHz processing speeds, digital signal processor or "DSP"-based VoIP capabilities and security.

Ikanos' low power broadband DSL CO chipsets being deployed by Chunghwa Telecom incorporate Ikanos Quality Video or "iQV" technology, which provides exceptional delivery of data-intensive triple play applications.

Ikanos' iQV is a combination of ITU G.inp compliant retransmission and Rapid Rate Adaptation technologies and enables the chipset to intelligently adjust its data rate instantly to provide optimal quality in any line condition. With iQV, IPTV services that may be severely degraded or dropped by less sophisticated chipsets will stay connected.

"Chunghwa Telecom is known for its advanced network capabilities and for offering innovative broadband services," Mitch Kahn, vice president of Corporate Development at Ikanos, said. "We are very pleased that D-Link's Ikanos-based modems and IP DSLAMs are part of Chunghwa Telecom's migration to its next-generation of multimedia capable broadband networks."

D-Link also announced the release of a free firmware update for its popular storage 802.11n all-in-one router that includes features to enhance the device's digital media content-sharing capabilities.
