By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Infonetics Research released excerpts from its third quarter 2010 (3Q10) Service Provider Routers and Switches vendor market share report. The company has announced that the full report will be published by the end of November.

The report stated that the service provider router and switch market grew 5 percent from 2Q10 to 3Q10, to $3.3 billion worldwide, even as ATM switch sales continued to tank. This includes IP edge routers, IP core routers. The report also stated that the overall carrier router and switch market is up 21 percent year-over-year (3Q10 over 3Q09).

In its report, the company has tracked regions such as Asia Pacific (with breakouts for China, Japan and the rest of Asia), Central and Latin America (CALA), EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), North America, and worldwide.

“North America is helping lead the telecom world out of the economic doldrums, with EMEA coming along quickly, as evidenced by the carrier router and switch market. Cisco (News - Alert) accounted for the largest part of the third quarter revenue upswing, and Alcatel-Lucent added solid quarterly gains, both driven by IP edge router sales,” predicted Michael Howard, co-founder and principal analyst for carrier and data center networks at Infonetics Research (News - Alert), in a press release.

The North American IP edge and core router market improved and grew by 41% year-over-year, the report stated. In carrier router revenue in 3Q10, Cisco and Alcatel-Lucent posted double-digit percent sequential increases with Huawei (News - Alert) and Juniper also posting carrier router gains in 3Q10, with revenue up in the single-digit percent. The report tracks companies such as Alcatel-Lucent, Avici, Brocade, Ciena, Cisco, Ericsson, Extreme, Force10, Fujitsu, Hitachi Cable, Huawei, Juniper, NEC (News - Alert), Nokia Siemens, Nortel, Orckit-Corrigent, Tellabs, ZTE, and others.

Recently, the company stated that the market for Optical Network Hardware is up by 16 percent in North America and the EMEA region. According to the report, worldwide optical network hardware market increased 6.2 percent quarter over quarter from 2Q 2010 to 3Q 2010, to $3.23 billion. North America continued its multi-quarter recovery and big carriers in EMEA finally started spending on optical network equipment again.
