VoIP Becoming Popular Among Small Businesses: Research

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

New research from In-Stat (News - Alert) finds that broadband IP telephony has become a popular form of VoIP in both the work-at-home and small business arena. According to the research agency small office spending on broadband IP telephony will increase 83 percent from 2010-2015.

“Broadband IP telephony offers a number of advantages for small businesses and SOHO; primary among them is the low monthly service fee and negligible costs for long distance,” says Greg Potter, research analyst.

“Unfortunately it does not provide the scalability associated with hosted and IP PBX (News - Alert) solutions. It also does not typically come with the service level agreements (SLAs) and quality-of-service (QoS) afforded by other solutions, which are general requirements for enterprise and medium sized businesses.”The research, “US Business Spending by Size of Business and Vertical, 2010–2015: Business IP/VoIP Communication Services” finds that traditional Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) is set to decline to just under $14.5 billion in 2015 while application-based Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) will increase over 50 percent from 2010-2015.

Among the different segments, mid-sized businesses (100 to 999 employees) have reported the greatest growth in spending in Business VoIP communications, increasing in excess of 10 percent between 2010 and 2015. Also, it’s expected that the professional services vertical market segment will spend over $3 Billion in 2013.

In another recent research report, In-Stat revealed that enterprise business spending on IT and telecom services, which include cloud computing, wireless, wireline voice, wireline data, and business IP/VoIP, will grow nearly 6 percent in 2011. Among the business segments, education, and healthcare and social services lead the surge with growth of 10 percent and 9 percent respectively.
