Octasic Continues to Transition from VoIP Chipset Provider to a Communications Infrastructure DSP Company

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

I recently had a chance to ask executives from Octasic (News - Alert) about its recent history and the direction the company is moving.

Please outline your new corporate initiatives.

Octasic is growing from a VoIP chipset provider to a communications infrastructure DSP company. We have built a team for video, by hiring 7 engineers who are developing our video solutions.

We have launched a new DSP, Vocallo, based on the Opus core which is the first asynchronous core on the market. Our goal is to take advantage of this technology and continue to incorporate it into our future designs.

This last year was an incredibly strong year for Octasic. We had a 50 percent growth in revenues, key management roles, and expansions in our product line. With our company growing worldwide, we now have local FAEs to assist our customers and meet their needs faster. Our relationship with ST has also continued strong and they have been a source of help with cultivating tier1 customers.

What pains does your company solve for customers?

Equipment manufacturers in the VoIP space are challenged these days by the large number of vendors that are our there, which in turn results in a very competitive market space. When designing gateways, cost, power, space and performance are the key metrics by which DSP vendors are measured. Gateways need to be highly capable to deliver the best voice quality while at the same time be cost effective.

Octasic delivers leading silicon that meet the high demands stated above. This is especially true with the new Vocallo media gateway on a chip. The Vocallo has a flexible business model that allows optimized costs and upgrades. Its unique pay as you grow sales business model enables customers to pay only for the features & densities they need and gives them the option to upgrade and scale through software licensing as needed without changing their HW design.

How is the media processing solutions space evolving?

For a long time now voice has been the leading medium by which people communicate. What is changing and what we can expect to see in the short future is video taking a more prominent place within the market. New solutions, like Vocallo, are starting to appear on the market and these solutions will enable the transition from sound to visual communications.

Now that VoIP is a mature technology, the focus is on delivering visual communications and integrated applications. This requires complete media processing solutions that are flexible enough to answer manufacturer’s needs. New devices are now populating our hands, pockets & living rooms which make the demand for them higher.

What does Vocallo bring to the market that has not already been delivered by your competitors?

Octasic's Vocallo is built on an asynchronous core. This is a first and one of a kind on the market. The advantage of an asynchronous core is that it delivers the lowest power to performance in the industry, and at an amazing price-point. This allows the Vocallo to set a new benchmark for system costs. Furthermore, the Vocallo is an open solution where customers can add their own features and capabilities to the extensive set provided by Octasic. The Vocallo also builds upon the pristine voice quality delivered by Octasic.

How do you see communication evolving over the next 5 years?

As IP networks become prevalent, and as broadband connections are increasing speed, processing capacity is moving towards the edge of the network. This enables new applications to be developed that are no longer building centered, but user centered. Applications will be visual and location aware.

In order to achieve this migration, processing technology has to become faster, cheaper, smaller, and lower power. Octasic is part of those leaders making this transition happen by delivering milestones in performance, integration of solution and cost.
