VoIP Developer Feature: ITEXPO Speaker Highlights Voice Quality with HD Codecs

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

Aculab, a provider of enabling technologies for the communications market, announced that it will participate at Technology Marketing Corporation’s ITEXPO East 2010 in January.

The VoIP developer is a Diamond sponsor of three-day event, which is scheduled for Jan. 20-22 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, Fla. As part of its sponsorship, attendees can visit the company in booth 607 on the show floor. In addition, Andrew Nicholson, product manager, Aculab, will participate in a session with representatives from Dialogic and Global IP Solutions (News - Alert) on “Delivering Superior Voice with HD Codecs” at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 21.

During the presentation, Nicholson will discuss how wideband codec support is now being built into handsets, gateways and other network equipment. Panelists will also talk about the processing ramifications of using G.722 codecs and the complexities of developing and delivering HD VoIP. Finally, Nicholson will reveal how HD-enabled products can enhance of communications.

In an interview with TMCnet, Nicholson said HD Voice offers a number of benefits.

“HD Voice offers clarity of communication,” he said. “No more muffled tones; no more need to use the phonetic alphabet to clarify your surname or postal/ZIP code; better comprehension of the many and varied accents spoken globally. It used to be that VoIP had to use minimal bandwidth, however, that restriction has largely been overcome so that VoIP channels can now economically provide high quality communications, and not just be seen as a means to achieve ‘free’ voice calls.”

VoIP developers are increasingly taking advantage of HD Voice to deploy audio conferencing, Nicholson said. As callers seek technology that offers a good conference experience, “making sure that the speaker can be clearly heard and understood through the use of HD Voice technology is a real benefit,” he said.

As with any technology, some challenges are ever present. For Aculab (News - Alert), the main challenge is choosing which wideband codecs to support on its media processing platforms, Nicholson said. Another challenge is for Aculab to maximize the number of wideband calls on its platform. That meant the company had to produce an efficient codec implementation. But with its Prosody media processing platforms, Aculab can meet customers’ changing needs from everything from TDM-based communications to narrowband VoIP communications, Nicholson said.

To better meet customers’ needs, Aculab’s Prosody X DSP boards and Prosody S host media processing software support a wide range of voice codecs. The firm’s list of codecs has evolved over time  to include new functionality to support customers. As the company saw HD Voice gaining in momentum and received customer requests to add wideband codec support, Aculab now offers support for G.722 and G.722.1 , a more efficient codec than the original G.722.

“We, too, have the momentum now, and have brought these new codecs to market in a very short lead time, with others in the pipeline to add to the mix,” Nicholson said. ‘Our ability to act quickly on customer requests for new features is one of the traits of working with Aculab that our developer partners appreciate the most.”
