VoIP call centers help contact center managers leverage advanced technologies to the best of their ability. When businesses make the vital decision to implement a VoIP-based call center, they will see an array of advantages including the reduction of operating costs and no longer being forced to spend additional capital on training their IT department on how to use the next-generation system.
However, a recent report suggests that the VoIP call center technology can sometimes be used for evil instead of good, causing huge losses to service providers and governments.
In a recent instance, the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police raided an illegal VoIP call center in Shantitole, Manamaiju, and arrested three people including two Bangladeshi nationals.
The arrested individuals are: Sabin Tamang of Dhading, and Mohammad Mazharul Islam and Nurul Alam of Bangladesh. They were operating the illegal VoIP call center out of Shankha Narayan Maharjan’s house.
Allegedly, the team used the VoIP call center to block telecom service providers’ gateways to bypass incoming international calls. Tamang was the brains behind the operation, said DSP Umesh Raj Joshi. According to Raj, Tamang had procured hi-tech equipment from the Bangladeshi nationals to operate the VoIP call center.
The crackdown was part of “Operation Voice Fox” which is currently under way to eliminate illegal call centers. As part of this investigation, the CIB team also confiscated three GoIP devices, 38 SIM cards, a desktop computer, antennae and inverters among other equipment.
The operation has already helped the CIB to bust 49 VoIP call centers, leading to the arrest of 79 racketeers in various parts of the country. Of the arrested, 16 are foreigners.
