Interactive Intelligence Deploys Voicemail Replacement for UNC Charlotte

By Greg Galitzine, Group Editorial Director

Interactive Intelligence’s (News - Alert) Messaging Interaction Center (MIC) is proving to be a practical solution at institutions of higher learning all across the country. In addition to a successful implementation at The University of Miami, the MIC solution was also deployed at UNC Charlotte.

UNC Charlotte is the fourth largest campus among the 17 institutions of the University of North Carolina system, and the largest institution of higher education in the Charlotte region, serving well over 20,000 students.

According to a recent case study showcasing UNC’s deployment of Interactive’s MIC, UNC Charlotte’s telecommunications office was managing voice mail services for about 3,300 faculty and staff.

Administrators believed that any unified messaging solution they chose had to be completely reliable.

“When our users lose access to e-mail or voice mail, they go into panic mode,” they said. “So reliability was very important.”

In addition, the new unified messaging solution would have to integrate with UNC Charlotte’s existing Microsoft Exchange and Sun iPlanet e-mail systems, as well as its Avaya (News - Alert) PBX, and Cisco phones being installed at new building sites.

UNC Charlotte selected Interactive Intelligence’s MIC for a voicemail replacement solution, citing its open, software-based architecture made it compatible with our existing third-party email, PBX (News - Alert) and phone systems.

MIC is more than just voicemail replacement however. The solution enables unified messaging features that allow users to retrieve voicemails as e-mail attachments on their PCs.
