TranSwitch Corp. Rolls-Out Atlanta 1000 Broadband Home Gateway Processor

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Service providers worldwide are rapidly moving to an 'all IP' broadband infrastructure to meet the surging demand for triple play services from residential and small businesses customers. In addition, there is an increased adoption of IEEE (News - Alert) 802.11n based WiFi. Because, WiFi is a preferred distribution technology for services such as High Definition voice, streaming video and high speed data within homes and small businesses, says William McDonald, director of product marketing at TranSwitch (News - Alert), in a press release.

In order to address the requirements of this fast growing market, TranSwitch Corporation, a provider of semiconductor solutions for the converging voice, data and video network, unveiled a new broadband home gateway processor, Atlanta 1000, featuring low power consumption.

As a new member of the Atlanta communications processor family, Atlanta 1000 delivers up to two channels of carrier-grade Voice-over-IP "VoIP" and wire-speed data throughput over IEEE 802.11n WiFi (News - Alert), according to a press release.

Company officials with TranSwitch said in a press release that Atlanta 1000 is a highly integrated System-on-Chip "SoC" solution that facilitates CPE manufacturers to achieve ground-breaking performance for Passive Optical Network" PON," WiMax, LTE (News - Alert) and other broadband applications.

Ideal for development of CPE appliances that are 'Power over Ethernet' capable and 'Green' compliant, the new Atlanta 1000 is extremely power efficient. It is configurable to a wide selection of industry standard narrowband and wideband low bit rate voice codecs from a field proven DSP with more than a million ports of commercial deployment.

Besides featuring a small footprint of 17x17mm, Atlanta 1000 packs a tremendous amount of computing power at very low power (less than 1 watt) consumption. The triple processor SoC composes of two independent RISC cores, a powerful TranSwitch proprietary Sigma DSP core, and dedicated hardware accelerators for packet classification and traffic management.

Atlanta 1000 features open, Linux-based software architecture, and also a turnkey residential gateway reference design that includes VoIP gateway and secure data router functionality. This unique architecture ensures excellent voice quality, data throughput and responsiveness of embedded Java Virtual Machine based applications even under full load conditions.

TranSwitch is also providing a complete system development kit and a software platform along with the product that allows OEM customers to achieve fast time to market along with the flexibility to customize and differentiate their products to achieve maximum market share.

In the recent news, Global Unichip, a provider of ASIC service, adopted TranSwitch's HD-PXL-1.4 IP cores supporting the latest HDMI 1.4 specifications. Global Unichip will be incorporating TranSwitch's IP cores in its ASIC service products for consumer electronics applications.
