The Cisco (News - Alert) Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast focuses primarily on two user groups the consumers and businesses; it was developed as a yearly study for estimating the global IP traffic growth and trends. The forecasts, inputs and methodology are first validated by Cisco with the data provided by service providers established all around the world.

The annual results of the Cisco VNI Forecast for 2009-2014 were announced by Cisco today. The Cisco VNI forecast has projected that the International Internet traffic will increase by more than four times to 767 exabytes or by more than a three fourth of a Zettabyte, by the year 2014. This increase is about 100 exabytes greater than the projected level for 2013, or it can be said that the increase is equivalent to 10 times of all the traffic traversing Internet Protocol networks in the year 2008.

Video will continue to dominate the traffic by exceeding 91 percent of global consumer IP traffic by the year 2014. Important factors like improvements in the network bandwidth capacity and Internet speeds, together with the increasing popularity of HDTV and 3DTV are expected to quadruple the IP traffic from 2009 to 2014.

IP networks must be intelligent and flexible enough to support this tremendous variety of traffic growth. The Cisco VNI Forecast offers a global snapshot of video's significance in our daily lives and signals the need for further network preparations to support the quadrupling of the Internet and the more than 1 billion online video users by 2014," said Pankaj Patel (News - Alert) in a release. He is the Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Service Provider Group, Cisco.
