UK's O2 Network Switches to VoIP

By Ashley Caputo, TMCnet Web Editor

As mobility usage begins to surge, businesses and network providers have been trying to create marketing strategies in the wake of technologies telematics revolution. In effort to adhere to this idea, U.K. mobile network O2 (News - Alert) has created a new way for customers to make calls through Wi-Fi using almost any mobile device.

Like all VoIP services, O2’s Tu Go calling feature provides users with a service that is cheaper than the traditional phone service and offers easier accessibility options, as it can be used directly from any mobile device that has this app.  O2 allows its customers that pay monthly to make and receive calls over the Internet from Apple and Android (News - Alert) devices, whether there is a network signal or not.

Since O2 works with Windows 7 on PCs, users can also access voicemail messages and send texts on the computer rather than the mobile device.

Facebook (News - Alert) has just created a similar platform to O2 that allows users to make calls using its new VoIP feature. The VoIP Facebook calling uses data when on a cellular network, but as long as user has a Wi-Fi connection the service is essentially free.

O2’s Tu Go app is not a paid service, so unlike Facebook, or even Skype (News - Alert), users don’t need a separate account to access the VoIP services. Instead, calls and texts will be charged or applied directly to a user’s monthly plan.

The application integrates with all mobile devices so that they can all access all of the same services, and have the same texting or calling capabilities. Users can access their address books, call history and conversations across all devices that are synced to the O2’s Tu Go app.

This new app O2 has created an entire new level of multi-platforms, allowing users to essentially convert a tablet into a mobile phone.

With this new development not only are mobile devices being integrated into our everyday life, but thanks to the BYOD trend and increasing mobility usages, these new syncing capabilities enable users to transform their devices to mimic each other with a simple click of an app.
