Telecom Companies Join Forces to Power New OTT VoIP Service Tornado

By Amanda Ciccatelli, TMCnet Web Editor

These days, we are experiencing a rise of interest in mobile operator VoIP services as carriers scramble to protect their voice revenue from services like Skype (News - Alert).

At Mobile World Congress 2012, Kineto Wireless (News - Alert) introduced Smart VoIP, a second line service which uses the operator’s existing infrastructure instead of relying on outsourced components. Second line services like Skype, Call International, and Bobsled are where the user still has a primary mobile service, and an OTT VoIP App is adding a second, “over-the-top” identity.

CounterPath (News - Alert), a developer of desktop, tablet and mobile VoIP software solutions, is now powering Optima Telecom’s new OTT VoIP service Tornado with its Bria mobile softphone application. Tornado enables Optima Telekom subscribers to stay connected with friends, family or colleagues no matter what or where they are located across the globe. Users can also call any fixed or mobile number device at a fixed rate, reducing roaming charges and billing surprises.

Today, CounterPath's VoIP softphones are completely changing telecommunications. Bria softphone for mobile devices and desktop, combined with the company's client management, provisioning and configuration server, enables enterprises and service providers around the world to offer a seamless unified communications experience across fixed and mobile networks.

"CounterPath is recognized as a quality brand renowned for producing quality and reliable VoIP software solutions," said Goran Jovii, CTO at Optima Telekom, in a statement. "The Bria softphone exceeded our requirements regarding security, stability and flexibility.”

In fact, Bria's ability to switch seamlessly between mobile and Wi-Fi networks gives businesses new options for "always on" connectivity while realizing cost savings through free Wi-Fi networks.

With a list of interoperability with IP PBXs and SIP-based network infrastructure softswitches, Bria is built with multimedia technology that provides a quality unified communications experience and voice and video calls over fixed, mobile and Wi-Fi broadband networks.

Moreover, CounterPath's solutions provide voice, video, messaging and presence that empower customers like Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T, Verizon (News - Alert), BT, Mobilkom Austria, NTT, Rogers, Avaya, BroadSoft, Cisco Systems, GENBAND, Metaswitch Networks, Mitel and NEC.

"This partnership highlights CounterPath's ability to develop unique solutions for all sizes of operators," said Todd Carothers, executive vice president of marketing and products at CounterPath. "The Tornado service demonstrates the versatility of Bria as we developed a completely customized and tailored softphone solution that met the specific needs of Optima Telekom and their customers."

Currently, Tornado supports voice calls, video calls, instant messaging and presence for Android (News - Alert) and iOS smartphones via 3G/4G or Wi-Fi networks.
