Global VoIP Revenues to Reach $65 Billion in 2012, Says Visiongain

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Global revenue from VoIP services will reach $65 billion in 2012, according to a new report from Visiongain (News - Alert).  The report, “Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Market 2012-2017: Prospects for Skype and Other Players” marks 2012 as the turning point in telecoms history due to the huge impact VoIP has on traditional telephony.

Voice revenues are in terminal decline, mainly due to the proliferation of VoIP service. Skype (News - Alert) and other VoIP services are set to reap some of the revenues that operators will lose. However, there is tough competition in the voice services market. VoIP is yet to enter the mainstay competition in this space.

The report analyzes this competitive market space to find what impact the VoIP services on the churn rates on mobile operators. It gives an overview of the current market and gives an accurate forecast how it will develop over the next five years.

“VoIP simultaneously represents a huge threat to mobile operators as well as a significant opportunity for growth the only barrier to success lies with strategy,” according to authors of the report. “VoIP can no longer be throttled by operators, instead it must be adopted and the telecoms landscape must change in accordance.”

Economic woes have created a market place ripe for VoIP growth. This scenario, combined with the proliferation of smartphones and tablets, further drives the demand for VoIP. The report discusses some of the strategies that operators may adopt for the success of VoIP services.

Recently Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) predicted mobile VoIP will grow from $605 million in 2008 to $29.5 billion in 2015, presenting a credible threat to traditional mobile voice revenues. The market research firm attributes the popularity of mobile VoIP to relatively low costs in comparison to traditional voice calls.

The study also sees strong growth rates for mobile VoIP and suggests that by the end of the forecast period in 2015, users will have grown to nearly 83 million lines or seats.
