Huawei, GENBAND Lead Carrier VoIP Market in 3Q11: Infonetics Research

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

A recent research from Infonetics Research (News - Alert) finds that the market for Carrier VoIP is down 12 percent in third quarter 2011 (3Q11).

The Service Provider VoIP Equipment and Subscribers market share and forecast report, however, says like other previous quarters, 3Q11 was a weak one for carrier VoIP. The global service provider VoIP equipment market, which includes trunk media gateways, SBCs, media servers, softswitches, voice application servers, lost the 12 percent it gained in 2Q11 with a 12 percent decline, to $441 million.

The year-over-year growth from 3Q10 to 3Q11 for the overall market is down 15 percent, the report said.

The VoIP equipment market is mainly driven by the growth of VoIP subscribers in fixed and mobile networks, SIP trunking, and IP interconnectivity.

Dialogic, GENBAND (News - Alert), Huawei, Metaswitch, and Sonus stand out in their performance in 3Q11 in specific segments. In 3Q11, Huawei gained on GENBAND to take the lead in the overall service provider VoIP equipment market

“Sequentially, all market segments are down in 3Q11, but from the year-ago quarter, there is one bright spot: session border controllers, with global revenue up 13 percent. The SBC and voice application controller segments are on track to be up in 2011, reflecting the continued shift to all-IP networks,” said Diane Myers, directing analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research.

The VoIP equipment market grew stronger in Central and Latin America, which posted a 14 percent increase in carrier VoIP equipment revenue in 3Q11 over 2Q11. This growth was driven by strong VoIP adoption, particularly in Brazil and Mexico, the research said.

Earlier in June, Exact Ventures said that the enterprise session border controller (SBC) market is booming – growing by a whopping 55 percent in the first quarter of 2011. The report attributes this growth to strong adoption of SIP trunk and hosted unified communications (UC) services, TMCnet reported.
