|

Instead of forwarding calls over the public switched telephone network (PSTN), something which can rack up costs because of call charges or be plagued by poor quality, voice peering forwards calls directly to other provider networks through the use of VoIP technology. For all of the VoIP providers out there, take note, as this can be a more efficient way of delivering voice traffic.

A Note on Peering and NGNs
At our sister publication, INTERNET TELEPHONY, VoIP Peering columnist Hunter Newby makes a further between VoIP Peering and Voice Peering: "VoIP Peering is where a call originates as IP, is transported as IP, and terminates as IP. Voice Peering is where a call either originates as TDM, terminates as TDM, or both, but is converted to IP in between for transport (provisioning) purposes. Since true IP-to-IP calls are, in the big picture of total calls, few in number these days, it is a popular belief that most peered calls are actually voice peered. This assumption will change over time, of course."

VoIP Peering Is Still Here
Do not even think for one second that VoIP Peering, or any of its various dimensions, are napping - and XConnect is the proof. In their latest announcement XConnect has laid down the VoIP Peering Law. For a quick recap here are the highlights...
|
XConnect Now Enables Carrier Business Processes
Larger service providers have had questions about VoIP peering federations for reasons having little to do with interconnection and exchanging traffic. Large carriers participate in an elaborate and extensive set of business relationships that provide real financial benefit, and they aren't anxious to opt out of those programs. So the ability to interconnect and exchange traffic through a " peering" federation has been relatively unattractive if it requires a change of business logic.

In the End, "Not Enough Time" for Broadband Stimulus Reflection
Though its supporters will not like the analogy, there are so many questions, and so little time to make firm decisions, that the "broadband stimulus" programs will wind up being uncomfortably like the "stimulus bill" in general: "vote before you've read it." The perfect should not be the enemy of the good, but there are too many public policy issues here to be adequately and reflectively addressed in the time that remains before June, when the first round of funds must be awarded: not "applied for," but awarded.

PROGNOSIS, Delphi and TMC Host Free IP Telephony Webinar
IP telephony (Internet Protocol telephony) is a term for Internet Protocol's packet-switched connections to exchange voice, fax, and other forms of information that have traditionally been carried over dedicated circuit-switched connections of public switched telephone network (PSTN). The service uses the Internet to manage calls as they travel as packets of data on shared lines, avoiding the tolls of PSTN.
|
VoIP Is NOT Internet Telephony
Aside from the obvious relationship there is an apparent not-so-obvious distinction that needs to be made. Internet Protocol is NOT the Internet and Voice over Internet Protocol is NOT Voice over the Internet. Voice over the Internet is also referred to as Internet Telephony although even those two applications of voice have their differences as well and should not be used interchangeably.
