Mobile Voice Over IP to Generate $32.2 in Revenues by 2013
By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor
Voice over IP, the technology that allows users to place free or lower cost calls via an Internet connection, has continued to increase in popularity for businesses users and consumers alike.
A recent study from research firm In-Stat (News - Alert) notes that the market for mobile devices able to place calls using VoIP will generate annual revenues of $32.2 billion by 2013 as more devices offer IP telephony capabilities.
According to In-Stat’s findings, these dual-mode handsets will hit close to 400 million units shipped in 2013.
In addition, In-Stat notes that as new 4G wireless networking technologies like LTE and WiMAX (News - Alert) are rolled out, mobile Voice over IP will continue to become a more cost sensible route for placing calls.
The report, "Mobile VoIP Transforming the Future of Wireless Voice," also notes that uses for mobile Voice over IP will include online services as well as 3G and 4G offerings.
Frank Dickson, In-Stat analyst said, "The increasing penetration of Wi-Fi in mobile devices was the beach head that Mobile VoIP applications needed. As user habits are being shaped by rich on-line communication experiences, mobile carriers control over devices and data applications is waning. Mobile carrier attempts to slow the spread of on-line Mobile VoIP are proving challenging as well."
