Sonus Hits New Traffic Milestones

By Cindy Waxer, TMCnet Contributing Editor

A recent market research report reveals that Sonus-based networks have extended the lead with most IP-based voice traffic. Sonus Networks is a supplier of service provider VoIP infrastructure solutions.

The report entitled, “VoIP Minutes and Subscribers: 2Q06 Update,” issued by iLocus, indicates that 37 percent of all long distance IP-based voice traffic is carried over Sonus Networks’ (News - Alert) IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS)-ready networks. In August 2006, Sonus carried approximately 25 billion minutes of IP voice traffic, representing an approximately 75 percent increase compared to August 2005.

“The voice market is entering an aggressive phase of migration to IP-based technologies, as evidenced by the tremendous growth in minutes that Sonus-based networks support,” said Jahangir Raina, director, iLocus. “The rate of acceleration is a testament to the fundamental strength of Sonus’ IMS-ready technology, their ability to support large-scale migrations seamlessly, and the Company's continued success adding tier 1 carriers to their growing customer base.”

Sonus’ IMS-ready architecture is relied upon by network operators globally, and today, Sonus solutions form the foundation of some of the largest and most sophisticated IP-based voice networks in the world. These large-scale deployments by leading communications providers highlight the maturity of the IP-voice market and the beginning of a new phase in the industry's migration to all-IP networks.

Sonus’ distributed architecture enables carriers to scale their infrastructure, penetrate new markets and expand their revenue opportunity by supporting the introduction of innovative new applications and services. The iLocus report recognized that Sonus leads both the national and international long distance market with 39 percent and 25 percent of voice traffic respectively. With more than a third of all IP-based voice traffic running on Sonus-based networks, Sonus carries approximately three times traffic more than any other vendor.

Just last week it was reported that Cable & Wireless International, a full service telecommunications provider in small to medium sized markets, selected Sonus Networks as the supplier of its next-generation IP-voice network. Cable & Wireless International plans to deploy one of the world's largest IP-voice networks delivering primary line local, long-distance and international telephony service. Operating in 34 countries around the world, including 14 islands in the Caribbean, Cable and Wireless will initially deploy its Sonus-based network to support the Caribbean islands and Bermuda. In select markets, Cable and Wireless plans ultimately to replace its infrastructure with Sonus IMS-ready access solution.

What’s the number one VoIP conference in terms of attendance? What’s the leading VoIP expo for exhibitors in terms of lead generation? And which VoIP industry event will feature special attractions for service providers, resellers, and the enterprise and SMB market as well as an overview on the Future of IP Telephony? Answer: INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & Expo, WEST, which runs October 10-13, 2006. See you in San Diego!
