Cloud communications are no passing fad; this burgeoning arena of innovation is introducing a new era of communication and collaboration. Riding this cloud wave is Singapore-based communication platform provider Wavecell, as this week the firm announced a successful round of series B funding, netting the firm $8.15 million.

The funding comes from a few primary donors, led by MDI (News - Alert) Ventures and Qualgro VC, joined by previous investors Wavemaker Partners and some new ones as well. The new round of funding will spur on Wavecell’s effort to expand market presence in the Asia-Pacific region, with a specific eye toward Indonesia as a result of the MDI investment.

“Having backed Wavecell from day one, we are thrilled with their progress in bringing to market a reliable and cost-effective cloud communications platform. With this latest round of funding in place, Wavecell is well-positioned to further expand its leadership position,” said Heang Chhor, Founder and Managing Partner of Qualgro.

In addition, the influx of funds allows the cloud communications firm to strengthen and further develop strategies for selling and marketing its live-video and messaging solutions, in addition to expanding the Wavecell engineering team.

Wavecell has done much wooing since its inception in 2010. Starting with a skeleton crew of 10, it built a foundation on the provision of cloud APIs to integrate multi-channel communications into enterprise products and service. Currently, Wavecell offers solutions in nearly 200 countries, with users texting, video and voice chatting from both mobile and Web apps as a result.

Watch out Indonesia, here comes Wavecell with its cloud communications platform. This nascent realm of technology is permeating every nook and cranny of the enterprise, with its tentacles reaching the far corners of the globe. Cloud communications is no passing fad.
